The Dramatic Timeline of Sjogren Industries

1888

Eight-year-old Swedish immigrant Oscar Sjogren came to the New World, ultimately settling in Worcester, Massachusetts to train and work as a machinist in the local wire mills.

After working at American Steel and Wire, U.S. Steel, and Wickwire Spencer Steel, a Colorado Fuel and Iron division, Oscar set out on his own and formed Sjogren and Sons in his two-car garage. Under his guidance, the company thrived by supporting the domestic wire industries

After thirty years of success, Oscar passed away, leaving his thriving business to his sons, Richard and Walter. The brothers continued to grow and enhance the company.

The Sjogren brothers rebranded the company as Sjogren Tool and Machine. Over the following decade, the company continued to grow under the leadership of Richard's sons, Richard and Robert. During this time, Sjogren employed 150 people across five separate divisions.

Trouble brews...

The recession of the early 1980s, combined with tightening monetary policy and a Fed Funds Rate set at 20 percent, forced Sjogren into bankruptcy court, where it was sold to a real estate investment group, MFA.

A new chapter unfolded...

At the age of 27, Carl Sjogren, Oscar's great-grandson, successfully raised $600,000 in capital to purchase the wire tooling division from MFA in April 1986. This initial acquisition comprised blueprints, customer lists, inventory, and specialized tooling.

Carl established his business in a 2500 sq. ft industrial park located in Oxford, Massachusetts, sharing the space with another startup company. The company name changes to Sjogren Manufacturing and expands business into Europe over the next decade.

Growth begins again..

After outgrowing the shared space, Carl acquires a 5,000-square-foot warehouse in Oxford, facilitating further business growth.

The company rebranded to Sjogren Wire Tooling to better align with its objectives to grow.

Carl continues to grow by acquiring all of Klauke Engineering US's assets. He introduces a new product line: Hysteresis brakes and clutches!

Expansion continues dramatically. Carl adds a location in Worcester, MA, adding 5,000 square feet to Sjogren Industries' footprint, which now totals 10,000 square feet and serves a growing customer base.

Confronted with competition in Europe, Sjogren introduces a metric straightener line that achieves significant success. The company now occupies 18,250 square feet of manufacturing space in Massachusetts.

Significant efforts to penetrate the European market commence.

Carl acquires all assets of S.P. Stevens, boosting contract manufacturing capabilities and integrating 5 highly skilled machinists into the team.

Carl purchases 982 Southbridge Street to consolidate locations in Worcester, MA., Where Sjogren continues to grow.

Always innovating. Sjogren Industries introduces marker groove technology for grooved rolls, enhancing quality and ease of use by operators on straightening lines.

Two lights-out machines are introduced over the next two years, allowing state-of-the-art manufacturing to produce the highest quality steel products with the fastest turnaround time to this day!

The Static Dancer Roll is introduced to the market, significantly reducing changeover and costs for customers, with its carbide rod having capability to be turned on the roll, giving longer lifespan to lines!

Our global reach is expanding, with representatives now present in China, Japan, Australia, and Germany, as well as throughout Europe, Mexico, and additional regions.

We have installed our first 5-axis machine, which allows us to turn more of our innovative ideas into real solutions for the worldwide wire and steel sectors.

A Keyence laser engraving machine is installed, allowing customers specific part numbers for highly specialized items, especially in quality tooling like tensile testing jaws and inserts.

After a courageous three-year battle, Carl succumbed to cancer. The team pushes forth to continuing to build upon the remarkable team and successes Carl introduced to the world.
